Project details
The Mokelumne Aqueduct Construction Project will restore and protect a key part of our water supply system. This project will recoat the aqueduct at 57 sites across Calaveras, San Joaquin, and Contra Costa counties. The aqueducts bring water more than 90 miles from Pardee Reservoir to Contra Costa County, where EBMUD stores, treats and delivers high-quality drinking water to more than 1.4 million people in the East Bay.
Mokelumne Aqueduct No. 1 was first built in 1929. Over time, its protective coatings have worn down, leading to corrosion. This project will recoat more than 18,000 feet of aqueduct with a new, three-part coating system to prevent further corrosion and ensure the aqueduct continues to work reliably.
Schedule
The project will begin in June 2024 and is expected to finish in fall 2027, with the bulk of work occurring from May to October, Monday through Friday. Construction will begin at Camanche Reservoir and work down the aqueduct toward Contra Costa County. EBMUD will notify residents within 10 days of construction moving into their area.
What to expect
Work at each site will follow the general sequence outlined below:
- Limited earthwork, as required, to provide clearance around the aqueduct for recoating.
- Erection of a containment structure consisting of scaffold frame and wrap.
- Abrasive blasting to remove existing coating(s) and corrosion.
- Application of new three-part coating system under controlled environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity) within the containment structure.
- Dismantle and demobilization of containment structure and coating equipment.
- Site cleanup and restoration, including limited ballast rock installation, hydroseeding, and access road repair.
Please note:
- There will be more trucks and construction equipment on the roads. Be cautious and watch for signs and workers.
- Construction noise will peak during abrasive blasting to remove old coatings and corrosion. The noisiest times will be between 7am-5pm. Additional equipment may be required outside these hours to maintain environmental conditions for the new coating.
This project aims to keep our water system safe and reliable. Your patience and understanding during construction are appreciated. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out.
