EBMUD seeks new lessee for performing arts center in Orinda

Potential bidders invited to submit proposals for former Cal Shakes site

OAKLAND – The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is accepting proposals for a new leaseholder for the outdoor performance site formerly occupied by the California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) in Orinda.

EBMUD is seeking interested parties, either a single entity or partner entities, with the ability to continue operating the venue as a community performing arts space. The 15-year lease with EBMUD requires the chosen entity to incorporate sustainable practices and/or watershed education into the operation or programming at the facility. Under the terms of the lease, EBMUD will also have the right to use the facilities for meetings, workshops, educational activities, and other community outreach events during non-performance periods. Interested parties will have the opportunity to inspect the property in early April and submit proposals by late May.

Property details: More than 970 acres of rolling EBMUD watershed lands serve as the backdrop for the approximately 6-acre property. The amphitheater has a central stage and an audience capacity of approximately 540 people. An indoor space can accommodate 20+ people for workshops and meetings. The property also includes a concession area, sound room, ticket booth, a paved plaza near permanent restrooms, a building with indoor meeting space and kitchenette, adjacent grounds with multiple picnic areas, a landscaped walking path, an access road, and a parking area for 200 cars. Interested parties should be aware that they will need to comply with local ordinances related to noise levels and operational hours.
