Water conservation strategic plan

EBMUD has promoted water conservation since the 1970s. Water Conservation continues to be an essential tool for ensuring a long-term water supply for the East Bay and preserving the natural environment.

The Water Conservation Strategic Plan (WCSP), updated in 2021, provides a roadmap for meeting EBMUD’s long term water conservation goals. The WCSP describes the program’s history and identifies drivers like climate change, drought, and emerging regulations that will shape the program in the future. It discusses the strategies and approaches that will help to meet EBMUD’s long-term goal of achieving 70 million gallons per day of water conservation by the year 2050. With a ten-year horizon, the 2021 Update presents current and planned projects to help customers and EBMUD use water more efficiently. The 2021 Update includes a focus on equity and a recognition of the multiple benefits of water conservation as a tool for protecting the future water supply, responding to droughts, reducing energy use, and promoting healthy ecosystems.
